July 14, 2009: ASEAN Studies Center “Soft” Launch Ceremony
American University’s ASEAN Studies Center, the first of its kind in the United States, was formally launched on Tuesday, July 14, 2009, in Jakarta, Indonesia. ASEAN Secretary-General Dr. Surin Pitsuwan and Professor Louis Goodman, Dean of AU’s School of International Service, announced the launch in an event held at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta. The launch reflects Southeast Asia’s growing importance in global affairs. Home to 600 million people and the world’s third-largest democracy, the region claims more U.S. business investment than China, and critical shipping routes pass through the region’s waters. The Center cooperates with the ASEAN Secretariat and other members of its network of study centers by conducting joint research, carrying out specialized training, and serving as a venue in Washington, DC, for addressing ASEAN-related issues. The Center is part of AU’s School of International Service, the largest and one of the oldest schools of international relations in the United States.
