SIS ASEAN EVENTS

Introduction

The ASEAN Studies Center hosts lectures, seminars, and conferences that advance knowledge and analysis of ASEAN for academic and policy communities. The ASEAN Studies Center also collaborates with D.C. think tanks, government agencies, embassies, and other organizations in the interest of contributing to the vibrant policy dialogue centered on Southeast Asia.

2013 Events

May 13: ASEAN-EU Conference: Dynamics of Inter-regionalism, symposium with representatives and experts from ASEAN member countries, the EU, and Washington, D.C., also on webcast; co-sponsored and funded by the Jean Monnet Chair, School of International Service

May 6: Our People, Our Future Together, talk by H.E. Dato Paduka Haji Yusoff Haji Abdul Hamid, Ambassador of Brunei Darussalam, co-sponsored by the Embassy of Brunei Darussalam

April 4: Democracy in ASEAN: Foundation for Regional Security? talk by Dr. Rizal Sukma, Executive Director of the Centre for Strategic and International Studies, Jakarta, Indonesia, co-hosted by the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia and the East-West Center in Washington (East-West Center in Washington)

March 22: Nasi Lemak 2.0, viewing of Malaysian film about the country’s ethnic relations; co-sponsored by the Malaysia-America Society

February 15: Ceramic Art and Culture of the Straits-Born Chinese in Malaysia and Indonesia, presentation by Mr. David Rehfuss, co-sponsored by the Malaysia-America Society

January 31: 2012 Annual Assessment of ASEAN, presentation of the ASEAN Studies Center’s 2012 Annual Assessment of ASEAN report by Professor Amitav Acharya and Professor Pek Koon Heng, with panel discussion by Mr. John Brandon from The Asia Foundation, Professor Catharin Dalpino of Seton Hall University, Mr. Ben Dolven from the Congressional Research Service, and Mr. Murray Hiebert from CSIS

January 25: Short Films from Colonial Malaya, viewing of Voices of Malaya and 1955: The Year of Malaya; co-sponsored by the Malaysia-America Society
