Experts and government officials from the U.S. and ASEAN countries came to American University for a day-long roundtable aimed at helping to lay the groundwork for substantive government-to-government discussions at the second U.S.-ASEAN Summit held in New York three days later. The ASEAN Studies Center co-hosted this off-the-record event with The Asia Foundation and the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS) Singapore, with support from the U.S. Department of State. ASEAN Secretary-General Dr. Surin Pitsuwan attended the lunch session of the event, where he gave the keynote speech. The Roundtable generated substantial discussion, and participants provided very favorable feedback.
