Lt. Gen. David W. Barno, USA (Ret.) was senior American commander of U.S. and coalition forces in Afghanistan from 2003–2005. Barno is an authority on military operations, the changing character of conflict, civil-military issues, and leader development. He was a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security. Barno has published extensively and testified before Congress numerous times. He earned his BS from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and MA from Georgetown University.
