Dr. Marwan M. Kraidy is assistant professor of international communication and international relations at American University in Washington, DC. He is a scholar of global communication and culture and an expert on Arab media.
Professor Kraidy’s books include Global Media Studies: Ethnographic Perspectives (Routledge, 2003, co-editor) and Hybridity, or, The Cultural Logic of Globalization (Temple University Press, 2005, single author). He will be completing his current book manuscript, Screens of Contention: Arab Media and the Challenges of Modernity as a 2005-2006 Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, DC.
Other publications include peer-reviewed articles in Critical Studies in Mass Communication, Communication Theory, Media, Culture and Society, Global Media Journal, Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media, Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, and Transnational Broadcasting Studies, in addition to edited volumes and proceedings. Kraidy is on the editorial boards of Critical Studies in Media Communication, Language and Intercultural Communication, American Communication Journal, and the Arabic edition of Global Media Journal.
Dr. Kraidy’s scholarly awards include the Ralph Cooley Award, the Prosser/Sitaram Award for Excellence in International Communication Theory, the Outstanding Scholarship Award in International and Intercultural Communication, and a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship for 2005-2006, in addition to outstanding teaching awards from American University, University of North Dakota, and Ohio University. He has given a number of lectures in North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia on topics ranging from Arab reality television to theories of globalization and cultural hybridity.
