IR Online Graduation and Commencement

Students should be advised of the following process and associated dates/deadlines for Graduation and Commencement:

1. Student applies to graduate on myau.american.edu under "Academics" 

2. Advisor clears student to graduate

3. Registrar populates link to "Rent my Regalia" in myau.american.edu

4. Student rents regalia

5. IROnline on-campus Commencement celebration 

6. SIS Commencement ceremony

 

Frequently Asked Questions

I want to walk in the upcoming Commencement ceremony, but I'll still have credits to complete. How can I request to walk before completing this credits?

Students finishing their degree requirements in a subsequent semester should not apply to graduate in that semester, but may be eligible to participate in the Commencement ceremony. See more information about eligibility here

If you have 3 credits or fewer remaining after this spring semester, you may be eligible to walk in upcoming Commencement ceremony. Please complete and submit the Commencement Participation Request form (below) to ironlineadvising@american.edu as soon as possible. 

I am graduating this semester, but can't come to campus for the ceremony that month. How can I request to walk in a later ceremony?

Students looking to walk in a later ceremony can also fill out the Commencement Participation Request form, below and refer to an outline of the walk deferral process here.

My family wants to watch the ceremony but cannot physically come to campus. Can they watch it online?

Yes. The full Commencement ceremony will be live-streamed. View last year's stream here.

What about awards?

Learn more about nomination processes here. Award recipients will be recognized during the Commencement ceremony.

How can I graduate with Latin Honors (e.g. summa cum laude, magna cum laude)?

Latin Honors are only granted at undergraduate level and in the Washington College of Law (WCL). Unfortunately Latin Honors are not granted at the graduate level for students at the School of International Service.
