Lourdes Garcia

Lourdes Garcia, IDPSA President, 2017/2018

IDPSA Role: President

Degree: MA International Development, Spring 2018

Concentration: Gender & Development

Favorite thing to do in DC: Exploring new restaurants and looking for the best sushi happy hour. So far nothing beats The Hamilton. I am constantly registering for events and conferences at the Wilson Center, Inter-American Dialogue, Carnegie, USIP, Embassies, and networking happy hours.

Fun facts: I am from Mexico but lived most of my life in Texas. Ever since my study abroad in Southeast Asia, Japan became a second home to me. I really enjoy poetry slams and live jazz.

Kimberly Maldonado

Kimberly Maldonado, IDPSA Vice President 2017/2018

IDPSA Role: Vice President

Degree: MS Development Management, Spring 2018

Favorite thing to do in DC: Even though I am not a city person, being able to walk almost everywhere in DC fascinates me and I've come to enjoy exploring the city in this way. I also enjoy hiking with friends on weekends and trying out new places to eat, especially ones that serve sweets and desserts.

Fun facts:  Being an islander from Puerto Rico, I grew up surfing and loving the ocean. As many of us here at American University, I love to travel to new places, gaining perspectives about different cultures. I am the happiest when I travel with my husband to surf other countries' waves. I am also a music enthusiast and learned to play the drums when I was 12 years old.

Ryan Altorfer

Favorite thing to do in DC: Having lived in Berlin, Germany and Valparaiso, Chile- two countries with tremendous relationships with music and clubbing- I find myself seeking out a similar state in DC. I also love to walk down to the Georgetown Harbor for some food and waterfront views.

Fun Facts: I was originally born in Santiago, Chile, but adopted and raised by a Swiss family living in New Jersey. I'm thankful for my parents because they brought me around the world from an early age- allowing me to accomplish visiting all seven continents by age 23.
