Meredith Maynard, Leon E. Clark Fellowship Recipient 2014
2014 Leon E. Clark Fellow, Meredith Maynard, SIS/MA '15
What organization did you work for and where?
I worked for the Colombian Agency for Reintegration (ACR) in Bogotá, Colombia.
What did you do?
As an intern in the ACR's External Relations Department, I developed relations with prioritized governments, relevant multilateral agencies, universities, and private sector think tanks on issues relating to humanitarian aid, development, DDR processes, and peacebuilding. I also promoted research, designed projects, and formulated policy analysis and interventions to facilitate reintegration.
As a personal interest project, I researched internal levels of beneficiary participation in the ACR's design and implementation of programs to be published for internal and external review.
What did you enjoy about the experience?
I am constantly learning, whether it is how to order a certain meal or how Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR) programs were implemented in other countries.
How did this experience prepare you for your future career?
This experience is invaluable to my growth as a student and as a young professional. I am learning how things function in an international public agency, cross-cultural communication skills, and the intricacies of successful DDR program implementation. The position that I hold as a Leon E. Clark Fellow is already contributing to my personal and professional growth and will serve as invaluable field experience in my future career.
