MOTOO UNNO

Dr. Motoo Unno is a professor from Meiji University in Tokyo. He was a visiting scholar of the School of International Service (SIS) and the Intercultural Management Institute (IMI) at American University in Washington, D.C. from April 2008 to March 2010. His research focuses on cross-cultural communication and leadership styles. As a visiting scholar, he has given three presentations about intercultural collaborative relationship between US-Japan, Japan-China and Japan-India at IMI in the fall of 2008. He published articles about “Japan and the U.S. in the Workplace” in the fall of 2008, “Contrast in Leadership: Monocultural Overseas Japanese Managers and the Multicultural Barack Obama” in the fall of 2009 and “The Toyota Congressional Hearings: A Cross-Cultural Conflict Situation” in the fall of 2010 in the Intercultural Management Quarterly.
In Japan he taught intercultural communication and intercultural management to more than 1,000 students at Meiji University. He is the author of 10 books, including Obama Grass-roots (2009), Japanese Subsidiaries in India and China (2008), Innovating Organization (2006), and Managing Motivation in Mergers and Acquisitions (2005). His new book about The Toyota Congressional Hearings will be published this Spring by Doyukan Inc. in Tokyo.
Dr. Unno has presented and facilitated training sessions for corporate audiences and municipal governments. His primary training area deals with organizational DNA and its relationship to HR and Corporate Strategy in Japanese companies. Other sessions included municipal government manager training sessions for effective communication between newly merged Japanese cities in 2006 and 2005; intercultural team building lecture to Tokyo members of the American Chamber of Commerce in 2004; a speech to a major Japanese insurance company’s senior executives on how to integrate different organizational DNA during Mergers and Acquisitions in 2003: conducted China pre-departure training to a Japanese auto parts supplier in 2002; and trained managers from 12 countries in the European financial institution Tokyo office in 2001. Most recently during his stay in Washington, D.C., Dr. Unno participated in the Obama grass-roots campaign in the State of Virginia, one of the election battlegrounds to become a “Blue State” on November 4th. As a volunteer, he knocked on 1,186 doors during the campaign and is founder and president of “Sushi for Obama.”
