KYOUNG-AH NAM

Professor, School of International Service, American University

Dr. Nam is an Assistant Professor at American University’s School of International Service. She has extensive experience in intercultural training, consulting, international education, and public relations working with key international organizations and transnational corporations as an external consultant and as an employee in Asia and North America, including the United Nations (New York), UNESCO Office for Asia and the Pacific (Bangkok), Samsung (Seoul), Ogilvy & Mather (Los Angeles), and Aperian Global (San Francisco).

Her areas of foci include intercultural communication, maximizing study/work abroad, expatriate intercultural training, cross-cultural perspectives on leadership, cross-cultural management, the role of culture in language learning, and intercultural interaction between U.S.-American students and international faculty/teaching assistants.  Dr. Nam’s research is applied in nature and focuses on how to assess intercultural competence, the nature of effective intercultural communication, and the impact of intercultural experiences on individuals and the larger society. She is the recipient of various research awards and published in key journals such as International Journal of Intercultural Relations.

Dr. Nam has conducted intercultural consulting and executive coaching for diverse organizations around the world.  A partial list of clients she has served includes AAI Corporation, Boston Scientific, Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles, CH2M HILL, eBay, Fox Family Channel, FoxKids, GAP, ING, International Olympic Committee (IOC), Korea International Trade Association (KITA), KPMG, LG Electronics, Mattel, Microsoft India, Siemens, Samsung Electronics, Symantec, webBASIS, and 3M.

Originally from South Korea, she loves travel and has worked and/or traveled in more than 35 countries over the last 15 years.
