(Global Environmental Politics) visited Beijing and Qingdao, China, and gave a book reading at the Beijing Bookworm from her most recent work, China's Environmental Challenges. Professor Shapiro wrote, "We have quite a big group of GEP grads working on environmental issues in Beijing!"

(Global Environmental Politics received the second place prize in the Web of Life Foundation's 2011 competition for his submission, "Humility in a Climate Age."

Olimar Maisonet-Guzman, SIS/MA '12

(Global Environmental Politics) was accepted as a youth delegate to the United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for the 2012 Rio+20 UNCSD. Maisonet-Guzman has spent the 2011-2012 year in Brazil as a Boren Fellow, studying energy and hydro-power governance.

John Pope, SIS/BA '14

was recognized with the 2011-2012 Patriot League Male Sportsmanship Award on June 4. The sophomore runs cross-country for American University.

Allison Silberberg, SIS/BA '84

was victorious in her bid for one of six seats on the Alexandria (VA) City Council in the June primary. The Democrat's platform includes support for affordable housing, English as a Second Language and GED programs, and revising the local waterfront plan.
