How do I register for college credit?
Accepted NSLC students interested in registering for the College Credit Option should go to the NSLC Web page for enrolled students and fill out the online registration form for College Credit. To register for courses you will need the NSLC Student ID that was assigned to you in your NSLC acceptance packet.

Who is eligible to enroll in college credit?
Certain NSLC programs require students to have completed their sophomore year of high school before enrolling in college credit. These programs include the following: Medicine and Health Care, Engineering, International Diplomacy, Business and Entrepreneurship, and Sports and Entertainment Management. All other NSLC programs do not have this grade restriction. For more information, contact collegecredit@american.edu.

How much does college credit cost?

In recognition of the scholastic aptitude and leadership merit of the students selected for NSLC, American University is offering a special reduced tuition rate of $745 per credit. More information

How many college credits am I earning for this course?
If you enroll in the college credit option in Engineering, Medicine and Healthcare, International Diplomacy, Business and Entrepreneurship, Sports and Entertainment Management, Intelligence and National Security, Mastering Leadership, Forensic Science, Law and Advocacy, Political Action and Public Policy, Culinary Arts or Theater, you may register through NSLC for either one or two college credits. International Diplomacy and Journalism programs will offer one or three credit options. The academic expectations page describes what's expected of these different credit options.

Does taking the College Credit Option require any special travel arrangements?
All students enrolled in AU credit will meet for the first time together with their professor on the opening day of their NSLC program for a seminar beginning at 2 pm and concluding before 6 pm in time for students to get dinner and join their peers for the opening NSLC festivities. Travel plans should accommodate the first day afternoon seminar. To learn more details and other important logistical information, please go to the travel page.

Can I receive a refund if I decide not to complete the program?
Upon written notification of cancellation received by the NSLC at least 30 days prior to the start date of the session in which the student is registered, all tuition paid for an AU course will be refunded. If a student cancels registration (or reduces the number of credits) within 29 days of the start of the session in which the student is registered for an AU course, or leaves while a program is in session, no refunds will be permitted. This policy is necessary to account for the program costs incurred with each enrollment

How do I contact my professor?
Professors are happy to answer any questions you might have regarding their course. Their contact information is on the course Web page and course syllabus. Professors will be communicating with their students via email prior to the start of each course. If you have a general question about the College Credit Option, please contact American University at collegecredit@american.edu for assistance.

Who will teach the college credit courses?
The college credit courses are taught by American University faculty. For more information on particular courses and the faculty teaching the courses, please see the courses page. AU College Credit courses taken at locations other than the American University campus will also be taught by AU faculty. Some of these courses may utilize Blackboard technology to supplement the traditional classroom meetings.

What is expected of participating students?
While the AU College Credit Option will not detract from the NSLC experience, it demands excellence in student performance. Participating students will be engaged, taught, and evaluated at the college-level by a university professor, who will provide a stimulating, innovative, and personalized learning experience that will help to prepare you for the expectations of higher education. This college course will require a commitment from the student to attend the extra class meetings during their NSLC program and, upon returning home, to complete the culminating assignment, which will be due within 30 days after your NSLC program. Who participates in the College Credit Option?
Hundreds of NSLC students have participated in the College Credit Option. The students in your course will be your peers in your NSLC program.

Will registering for college credit take away from my time with NSLC?
This credit option does not take away from your activities at the NSLC but further enriches your experience. This is an opportunity to widen your focus at the NSLC and to continue to learn after the program under the supervision of an AU professor.

How do I obtain access to AU on-line resources?
Registered students have access to many on-line resources provided by AU. Consult this guide for on-line access instructions.

Can I make changes to my registration, for example, adding or dropping a course, changing the number of credits or the grade type?
The College Credit Option introduces high school students not only to the expectations of college-level academics but also to the responsibilities of registration at a university. Students and their parents/guardians should note carefully the associated registration, records, and refund policies and deadlines, which can be reviewed at the academic policies page. Any changes to a registration must adhere to the published deadlines and will be subject to the refund policy.

Communicating Changes in Registration
Changes in registration prior to the first day of the AU course should be communicated directly with NSLC. Changes in registration on or after the first day of the AU course must be communicated to the NSLC first and then to American University at collegecredit@american.edu.

When is my work due? How should I submit it?
All your work should be sent in by the due date specified on your syllabus, generally within 30 days after the end of your NSLC program. Course syllabi will give instructions for submitting your work.

Do I receive a letter grade or a pass/fail grade?
Students are advised to take the college credit as a letter grade (A-F), especially if they anticipate seeking to transfer the credit to another school. Many colleges and universities do not accept transfer credit taken pass/fail.

How and when will I receive my grade? How do I send it to colleges?
At your first class meeting, you will receive and should complete an American University transcript request form. When you have completed your assignments and once your professor has submitted a final grade, an official American University transcript will be mailed to the address you specified on the request form. Transcripts will be mailed shortly after final grades are posted to students' academic records. If you need additional transcripts to send to colleges, please visit the alumni page.
