On-line Access Instructions

Below is the information you will need to access American University's technology services.

Your AU ID number is a 7-digit number that is your unique identification within the AU computer system. You will need this to request a transcript, access the library, and receive help from the Helpdesk. You should have obtained your AU ID through your NSLC student portal

page. However, if you have misplaced or forgotten it, e-mail us at and we can send it to you.

Your login is used to access all AU computer systems. It takes the form: fl1234a where f is your first initial, l is your last initial, and 1234 are the last 4 digits of your AU ID number. You use the login to access and Blackboard.

Your professor will assist you in creating password associated with your login. If you need to change your password, go to (described below) and log in. Click on the technology menu. Click on "change my password," and follow the instructions to choose a new password. Once you have done so, return to the technology menu and click on "synchronize passwords." This will ensure that your password is the same for all AU computer systems (but not AU-Gmail, see below).

AU Email

As an AU student, you will be assigned an AU email address. To ensure that you don't miss any important emails from us and to fully participate in the Blackboard site, you must forward your AU email to an email account you regularly check. AU runs its student email through Gmail. To forward your email from AU-Gmail to another address, log into using your AU login and password. The password is case sensitive. Click on "Settings"and then "Forwarding and POP/IMAP." Check the radio button beside "Forward a copy of incoming mail to" and enter your email address in the box.

This web address is the university's main student web portal. From here, you can access a host of student services. Use your login and password to log-in to the portal in the upper left hand corner of the screen. Once you log in, personalized menus will appear that will allow you to change the settings on all your AU accounts.

Blackboard is the university's interactive web-based classroom space that you will use to complete your class assignments. Go to and log-in. Use your AU user-id and your password. Your class should automatically appear on your screen. Click on your class to access all the material your professor has put on-line for you.

The AU Library

As a student, you have access to the AU Library including its catalog and on-line databases. This is a tremendous resource for you as you complete your class assignments. To access the library, visit Click on Search the Catalog to use the library catalog, or Search Databases to access all of the university's research databases. To access a database, you will be asked to enter your last name, AU ID number, and select AMERICAN as the school.
