Maria Cowles, who holds a master’s in European integration and a PhD in international service from SIS, now serves as her alma mater’s associate dean for academic affairs.

IC professor Gary Weaver honored for 46 years at AU:
Gary Weaver has created and directed numerous academic programs at AU, including the Intercultural Management Institute.

SIS signs dual degree agreement with Chengchi University in Taiwan:
AU Interim Provost Ivy Broder and Chung-chian Teng of National Chengchi University (NCCU) in Taiwan signed a dual degree agreement on Nov. 19. Both institutions will now permit students to earn degrees from each university. The reciprocal agreement encompasses both graduate and undergraduate students in AU’s School of International Service (SIS) and NCCU’s school of international affairs.

New SIS Building Groundbreaking:
Ground was broken officially on November 14, for the innovative new home of the School of International Service, a “green” building that will rise over the next two years on what is now an asphalt parking lot at the edge of the AU quad. Senator Daniel Inouye of Hawaii joined AU President Neil Kerwin and other dignitaries to mark the occasion.

Artist Fernando Botero:
Dean Louis Goodman moderated a discussion with renowned artist Fernando Botero, whose images of Abu Ghraib opened at the AU Museum.

Annual SIS dinner:
More than 300 faculty, staff, and students munched on culinary delights from around the globe during the annual SIS international dinner.

Former president Jimmy Carter spoke about his recent trip to Sudan before an audience of students, faculty, staff, and dignitaries at American University.

State Dept. awards $1.5 million to Center for Global Peace:
AU’s Center for Global Peace has been awarded $1.5 million from the U.S. Department of State to continue its work on human rights in Iraq. The 18-month grant will continue the work begun by the center to help establish a human rights commission and enable it to work effectively in Iraq’s challenging circumstances.

SIS Europe Forum discusses U.S.-Turkey relations:
Relations between Turkey and the West are “in serious trouble” for more reasons than the war in Iraq according to a scholar on Turkey speaking at the SIS Europe Forum.

SIS Students part of growing Fulbright community:
International scholars take first step toward establishing a more formal Fulbright community on the AU campus.
