AU and Brookings Team Up

The Brookings Institution’s Initiative on International Volunteering and Service includes a push to increase campus engagement, and AU was chosen as the venue for a forum to introduce this idea. Last December, AU’s vice president of international affairs, Dr. Robert Pastor, moderated a panel of students and staff from AU and eight other universities in D.C. to collaborate on a plan to double the number of U.S. volunteers in international service by 2010. The Brookings Institution recognizes a growing need to “increase dialogue and cooperation between the United States and people of different countries worldwide,” as it “seeks to explore ways in which the culture of volunteerism can help enhance global understanding and security,” as stated on: its website. The directors of this initiative are themselves AU alumni, and as recent graduates they are able to network with and motivate current students throughout the D.C. area. For more information on opportunities to take part in this initiative, send an email to volunteering@brookings.edu.
