Anna Carpenter: Harry S. Truman Foundation Scholarship Winner!

Anna CarpenterWe at SIS are proud to announce that SIS/SPA senior Anna Carpenter has been awarded the prestigious Harry Truman scholarship for her home state of Minnesota.  Awarded to around 75 promising American students, the Truman scholarship provides a $30,000 education grant for graduate study in the area of public service.  In fact, recipients of the scholarship are expected to work in a public service position for at least seven years following their graduation.

What made Anna the perfect candidate for the Truman scholarship?  She has been devoted to serving the public interest at home and abroad.   Last fall, Carpenter participated in the AU study abroad program in Kenya.  Besides excelling in the classroom, she interned with the Centre for Domestic Trading and Development.  While working and studying in Kenya, Anna spearheaded a public advocacy and education campaign targeting marginalized female domestic workers.

Her hands-on program educated local women on HIV/AIDS, sexual abuse, labor rights, and human rights.  Carpenter has also held internships with public advocacy organizations such as Amnesty International and the Center for Victims of Torture.  She currently works on campus at the Center for Global Peace.  Anna’s course work here at SIS has focused on international peace and conflict resolution in the African region.

Upon completing her degree from AU, Carpenter plans to apply her Truman award to a master’s degree in social work and public policy.  In the future, she would like to return to her home town of Minneapolis, Minnesota where Anna plans to put her education and rich work experience to use in the local immigrant and refugee communities.  Anna is proof that SIS students don’t have to leave the United States to practice “international service.”
