Faculty and Staff Resources

Compass

The SIS Office of International Programs (OIP) seeks to develop and enhance the international opportunities available to the SIS community through meaningful programs and partnerships. To learn more about the office and its activities, please visit our About Us page. Below are a few resources for ways that you can support the work of the OIP and also receive support for your work at SIS. If you have questions regarding something that is not included in the below information, please contact us at sisabroad@american.edu.

International Travel Insurance

Full-time faculty and staff must receive additional emergency insurance coverage for international travel that pertains to their work at AU. Any time you intend to travel abroad, please send an email to sisabroad@american.edu indicating the dates, location, and purpose of the trip. The Office of International Programs (OIP) will then add you to the insurance policy for your time abroad. If you will be traveling to a high risk location, please include more information about your local support and planned activities during your time abroad. You can also reach out to the OIP to determine the risk level of your location or planned activities before submitting your request for insurance. For more information on travel insurance, visit http://www.american.edu/finance/rmehs/inttravel.cfm.

Program and Partnership Building

Our SIS faculty members are at the core of our most successful and transformational partnerships. To create strategic, worthwhile international programs we rely on their connections and expertise that extend widely across both academic areas and world regions. We encourage all current SIS faculty members to get involved with the School's international activities as both a way to develop new opportunities for the SIS community, but also to further their own academic and professional pursuits. For current SIS faculty who would like to propose a new study abroad program, partnership or collaboration with an institution abroad, please contact the SIS Office of International Programs to discuss your interests (sisabroad@american.edu). For more information about our current programs, institutional partnerships and how we connect with prospective partners, please visit our SIS International Partnerships web page links on the left hand column of this site.

Promoting Study Abroad and Supporting International Students

Staff, faculty and alumni are the most important advocates for international education and exchange at AU. Support from the SIS Community to encourage our students to pursue academic and professional development opportunities abroad is essential. SIS is also home to many international students who are here to complete an SIS degree or who are part of an exchange program. The integration of these students into our classrooms and SIS Community is central to the internationalization and global perspectives that we strive to incorporate into all areas of our institution. Supporting our SIS international students and scholars is also an important way for our community to build global networks and strengthen our institutional ties abroad.

To learn more about how to encourage SIS students to study abroad, please visit our Steps To Study Abroad web page. For more information about our current programs and activities at SIS that support study abroad and international students, please feel free to visit our website, learn more about our Global Networks Program, or reach out to our office to speak with our staff.
