Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (Carlos III) is one of the newest public institutions of higher education in Spain, celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, and is already well-known in Europe for its innovation and internationalization. Its Master in European Law Program combines academic research in EU law with practical field experience with both EU and Spanish institutions to be a platform for students pursing careers in law, government, business, or academia. The Program offers a contemporary curriculum set against the historic backdrop of one of Europe’s most exciting cities. Spend a semester in Madrid to experience the EU from a Spanish perspective.

Coursework

Students who participate in this one-semester program sit beside Carlos III's graduate population in the Master in European Law Program. Students enroll as full-time students and follow the Program’s complete schedule of content areas and are awarded nine (9) AU credits upon successful completion of five (5) exams. Students are challenged in such courses as the following:

  • Economic Policies of the EU
  • Human Rights of the EU
  • European and Spanish Foreign Policy
  • Political Governance in the EU
  • International Organizations in the 21st Century

The Program is modeled after the traditional European-style education system, which is based on a series of lectures grouped into content areas and includes oral examinations. AU students enrolled in the Program attend all lectures and should expect to be examined in all content areas to receive the full nine (9) AU credits.

Language Requirement

The European Law Program at Carlos III is conducted entirely in Spanish. AU students who wish to participate in the program must demonstrate proficiency in Spanish at a high intermediate level at the time of application and are encouraged to reach advanced proficiency before enrolling at Carlos III. Students are required to submit their TOR language exam results as part of the application.

Academic Calendar

Fall semester: September – January

Spring semester: February - June

Due to the sequential nature of the courses offered on the Program, students are encouraged to enroll at Carlos III in the fall semester. This requires that students make special arrangements to take their final exams in Madrid before the official final exam period in order to return to AU in time for the beginning of the spring semester.

Registration

  1. Students are registered through the SIS Office of International Program Development for nine (9) AU-Carlos III de Madrid exchange credits (SIS-677). These exchange credits cover the Program credits only; research and/or internship credits are registered under normal AU guidelines.
  2. Students are required to meet with their AU academic advisor and obtain formal pre-approval before enrolling at Carlos III. This ensures that all credits earned on the Program can be applied toward the student’s AU degree.
  3. Because students are required to follow the entire Program at Carlos III but may not need to take exams in all content areas, they will need to discuss their intended examination areas with the Program director once on site in Madrid.

Credit articulation: The credit and examination system at Carlos III follows the traditional set up at a typical European education. Students earn credit according to Grades and credits earned at Carlos III are articulated through the SIS Office of International Program Development upon receipt of transcript from Carlos III. For conversion purposes, students should expect 2 Carlos III credits to equal 1 AU credit.

Tuition and Fees

Students pay regular tuition, emergency international health insurance, and technology fees to AU. Students do not pay the student activity fee, sports center fee, or SIS fee while studying at Carlos III. Students pay Carlos III for housing if they opt to live on campus.

Students are responsible for any incidental costs, such as library fines, incurred during the program. Students are responsible for all personal expenses including housing and transportation.

Housing

A variety of housing options exist in Madrid. Students may choose to apply for housing in Carlos III’s dormitories or for a homestay organized by the university. They may also choose to find their own flats, hotel, or hostel. Carlos III has ample resources to help students find housing in the city. Students are responsible for any and all costs associated with their housing.

Visa and Immigration

Once admitted to program, students are issued a letter of acceptance by Carlos III. Students use this document to apply for their student visa at the nearest Spanish embassy or consulate.

Students are responsible for researching the most up-to-date immigration requirements and arranging all immigration documents.

Student Orientation

During the semester prior to the start of the program, the SIS Office of International Program Development conducts a mandatory pre-departure meeting. Topics covered include administrative, logistical, security, health, and cross-cultural issues. Carlos III welcomes students in the fall semester with orientation activities.
