Taught in the Graduate School of International Relations at Ritsumeikan University, the Global Cooperation Program (GCP) focuses on market and non-market approaches in working with post-Cold War North-South problems, providing a broad interdisciplinary perspective for international cooperation. The following areas are examined:

. Major actors in the area of international development
. Broader international contexts through examining the history of global governance and North-South relations
. Resolving security problems as an indispensable precondition for development
. Other closely related issues such as gender, social development, and the preservation of the environment
. Area studies

In addition, students may choose to take part in an internship program at international organizations, governmental agencies, multinational corporations, or non-governmental organizations.

All of the classes in the Global Cooperation Program are conducted in English. Students can register for up to 12 credits at Ritsumeikan University which will transfer back to American University. Graduate classes in GSIS are worth 2 credits per class. Since American University and Ritsumeikan University are partner schools all students will register and pay for AU tuition while they are studying abroad. Graduate students should work with their advisors to see how this program can best fit into their schedule. Students can participate in this program in either the Fall semester (September - January) or the Spring semester (April - July).
