The Council
Supporting
Professors

SOFAS stands for Student Organization for African Studies.  Its purpose is to coordinate and promote activities that will increase awareness of African issues and assist in the establishment of a Council for African Studies within American University’s School of International Service.

Why is the Council for African Studies so vital to AU?

Many of the global issues of concern are particularly prevalent in the countries of Africa. A program focused on African studies makes the SIS program inclusive and comprehensive.

This is an excellent time to develop an Africa-centered program, given the recent focus on Africa by the Bush administration and the media. Furthermore, AU has a wealth of professors with African interest, expertise, and heritage, all of which have the potential to be an invaluable source of knowledge for the Council.

How can you get involved?

SOFAS membership is open to all AU students, staff, and faculty who are interested in the development of a Council for African Studies.  Contact Linnisa Wahid for more information:
