Admissions Requirements

To apply for the master's degree program, you must:

  • Hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Have earned a 3.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA), based on a 4.0 scale, calculated on your last 60 credit hours (last two years) of undergraduate course work
  • Present satisfactory scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test (verbal, quantitative, and analytical) taken within the last five years. Official scores must be sent directly to American University by the Educational Testing Service (AU's CEEB code is 007995)
  • Have the ability to speak and write well in English. Applicants whose first language is not English must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), unless they have received a degree from an accredited U.S. institution. A minimum TOEFL score of at least 600 on the paper-based version or 250 on the computer-based version is required
  • Meet any special individual program requirements

Your AU Application for Graduate Admission must include:

  • A 1,000 word statement of purpose describing your commitment to pursuing graduate study in the program
  • A current resume, if you have professional work experience
  • One sealed, official transcript from each college, university, professional school, or post-secondary school you have attended
  • Two sealed letters of recommendation
  • Your application fee

Admission Deadlines

Priority application deadline December 15th
Rolling admission until start of fall semester for all weekend programs
Spring Application Deadline (Film Only): November 15th
Fall Application Merit Deadline: February 1st with final application deadline of June 1st for all full-time programs
Fall Application Final Deadline for International Students: April 1st
