Professors

Professor and filmmaker Larry Engel.

Larry Engel has been teaching and making films for more than 30 years. A producer, director, screenwriter and cinematographer, his documentaries appear on PBS, the Discovery Channels and National Geographic, among other outlets. Awards include a Daytime Emmy for Best Cinematography, a AAAS-Westinghouse Science Journalism Award for excellence in science writing for television, and the Mountain Spirit award from Mountainfilm in Telluride. He focuses on theory and production, and enjoys the outdoors. He teaches SOC’s Extreme HD: Classroom in the Wild-Alaska, and currently is team-teaching an interdisciplinary course on the practice of environmentalism that will take students to the Galapagos Islands. His three-part PBS series "The Human Spark" hosted by Alan Alda premiered January 2010 nationwide and continues living at pbs.org/humanspark. He is director and director of photography for this international investigation about what makes us uniquely human.

Teaching Assistants

Alisa Morse is a rising senior from Topeka, Kansas. She is a part of the Film and Media Arts program at American University and is joining the Discover the World of Communications team for the first time. Alisa is interested in both film and photography and has worked on set for several graduate student productions. In the future, Alisa would like to work in television and film.
