The School of Communication at American University, Washington, D.C., seeks to fill a position at the level of tenured Professor or Associate Professor in Journalism beginning August 2013. We seek a candidate with deep journalistic accomplishments and national professional stature, someone who is excited about the future of journalism and not nostalgic about the past. The successful candidate will have a proven record of leadership in cutting-edge practice, media innovation and collaboration. Evidence of excellence in teaching at the college level is highly preferred. The ideal candidate will be able to adapt and succeed in a fast-paced scholarly environment as we reshape the future of journalism and the future of related industries. We seek a candidate who can act as a catalyst for journalistic and academic innovation and who can work collegially to make it happen. The best candidates will have a record of fostering cooperative working environments and a career that demonstrates achievement in the world of emerging media technologies.
The School of Communication’s talented and engaged faculty draws from both scholarly and professional backgrounds. The Journalism faculty has a national reputation for work in the areas of investigative, online, entrepreneurial, and international journalism.
The candidate should have a PhD and/or national standing in the field accompanied by an upper level degree. The candidate’s course load will be commensurate with other duties; most tenured faculty members teach a 2-2 course load. The successful candidate must be able to teach undergraduate and graduate professional and/or theory-based courses in journalism or in related communication fields. Salary is competitive and dependent upon qualifications and experience.
