Darrell Hayes is an adjunct professor of Public Communication. He teaches public communication campaign courses for graduate students and theory classes for undergraduates. Until 2011 when he retired from full-time teaching, he served as an assistant professor and also as director of the Weekend Public Communication Graduate Program for working professionals. He typically teaches crisis communication and a variety of practical professional courses in SOC. He also teaches courses in media relations and crisis management for the School of International Service. He is the author and editor of Public Relations Cases, 9th edition published in January 2012 and also of the 8th and 7th editions, a textbook used on more than 125 college campuses. He also conducts media relations courses for the U.S. Department of State Anti-terrorism Assistance Program.
Prior to joining the American University faculty in 2001, he was the managing director of the Aerospace Education Foundation, which promotes an understanding of aerospace policy issues and encourages young people to enter the math and science fields. He also has more than 25 years’ experience in public relations and communication issues.
He is accredited with the National Public Relations Society of America. In the past he has served as the National Capital Chapter assembly delegate to the National PRSA convention and chairman of the technology, membership and professional development committees.
