Adjunct Professorial Lecturer

David Helfert, MA, is an adjunct professor of Public Communication. He has been an SOC adjunct since 2005. He also teaches courses at Johns Hopkins University and at the George Mason School of Public Policy.
Helfert brings many years in the practice of political and governmental communication to the classroom. He began as a newspaper, radio and television news reporter and anchor, then became public information director for the Texas House of Representatives. He was managing partner of a marketing/advertising agency for nine years and a political/governmental media consultant for seven.
In 1994, he was recruited to the Clinton Administration, and following six years as a Public Affairs Director for a federal agency, went to work in the U.S. House of Representatives. Over nine years on The Hill, he was Communication Director for two military subcommittee chairmen and Democratic spokesperson for the House Appropriations Committee. He also trained and mentored new Democratic press secretaries.
Helfert did his undergraduate work in Journalism at the University of Texas and earned a Master's degree in Public Communication from American University.
