AU Students Help Non-profit Win funding

Georgetown South: Community At The Crossroads, a short film made by AU students Kayt Jonsson and Casey Nitsch, helped a local organization get funding. The organization featured in the film, Unity in the Community, received funding for "1 By Youth," which is a collaborative effort with other local organizations. The film is to be entered into a national competition in Anchorage, Alaska and highlighted on the Virginia State Neighborhood Conference website.

Prof Opens Photo Archive to New AU Center for Latin American and Latino Studies

In the past, Professor Bill Gentile has travelled to Latin America and the Caribbean for United Press International and Newsweek Magazine. Recently, Gentile agreed to open his photo archive to the New AU Center for Latin American and Latino Studies. The photos include the time he spent covering Latin America and the Caribbean with images of the Salvadoran civil war, Fidel Castro’s Cuba, the U.S. invasions of Panama and Haiti, and much more. Prof Signs Distribution Deal

Professor Brigid Maher's Veiled Voices, which was broadcast in March 2010 for International Women's Day on Link TV and on Bridges TV, and also aired on PBS stations throughout the country throughout March as part of Women's History Month programming, has been signed in a distribution deal with Al Jazeera to be distributed for all forms of broadcast in the Middle East & North Africa. Veiled Voices investigates the world of Muslim women religious leaders through the eyes of three women in Lebanon, Syria, and Egypt. Watch trailer or read more

LinkTV Picks Student's Promo for Broadcast

Grad student Emily Gaines created a 15-second motion graphics promo for LinkTV as part of Brigid Maher's Motion Graphics 2 class. LinkTV liked it so much that they picked it up for broadcast, and it's now in heavy rotation on the channel.

Student and Alum Named Winners in DCist Photography Contest

The hugely popular DCist yearly photo contest had hundreds of entries. Of the 47 selected, two by student Jonathan Malis and one by alum Michael Starghill were chosen. Check out Malis's first and second photo and Starghill's photo.

Student Nominated for ACE Award

Student Michael Hyde was nominated for an award by the American Cinema Editors. Hyde received dailies from a scene for a television pilot with the production notes and was asked to edit them. He attended the annual Eddie Awards Ceremony with guests including Joel McHale, from E's "The Soup," Lee Daniels, the director of "Precious," Morgan Freeman and Christopher Guest. Hyde said it was an honor to be nominated. "It was wonderful to be recognized by talented editors who have had careers I'm now just aspiring to have."

Student Creates Network for Environmental Activists

Film and electronic Media graduate student Alex Morrison created DIY: What Can I Do, a social networking website that brings together scientists, environmentalists, and those concerned about global climate issues and provides a forum for their videos and ideas.  The network is Morrison's thesis project.

The International Journalism Network has set up a video channel on Youtube for journalists around the world to utilize to better hone their craft. In a two-part video, professor Bill Gentile spoke at length about what backpack journalism is, what comes with being a backpack journalist, and tools are necessary for the craft. Academy Award-winning Sound Producer Talks to NPR About 2010 Nominees

SOC Artist-in-Residence and Oscar-winner Russell Williams spoke on NPR’s "All Things Considered" about the subjective art of movie sounds. Williams provided his commentary on nominees for the 2010 Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing. Williams won two Academy Awards for his sound work on Glory and Dances with Wolves.
