Students learn to work as reporters and editors at print and online publications, acquiring the professional and production skills needed to work across platforms.
The program includes core courses in the ethics and principles of journalism, with electives that allow students to specialize in public policy, international relations, economic or other types of journalism. All courses emphasize strong writing skills and many teach students to use a range of information gathering tools, including databases and the web.
The program offers internships at national and local news organizations in Washington. Many special events plus guest lecturers and the School of Communication's American Forum program, with WAMU-FM, allow students to meet leaders in government and the media.
