Bill Shields Named ASPA Director

Bill Shields

Adjunct Professor Bill Shields

Adjunct Professor Bill Shields has been named the new Executive Director for the American Society for Public Administration. The American Society for Public Administration (ASPA), is the largest and most prominent professional association dedicated to advancing the art, science, teaching, and practice of public and non-profit administration.

ASPA President Stephen E. Condrey, in announcing Shields’ acceptance, said, “This marks an important transition in ASPA’s history. As we mark our 75th Anniversary, we are embracing a new leader committed to continuing ASPA’s growth, raising its profile and preparing us for our next 75 years. The National Council is excited that Bill has accepted this opportunity and look forward to working with him to keep ASPA moving forward.”

In some ways this is a return to home for Shields to the public administration community. During his 10-plus years at the National Academy of Public Administration, Shields worked with many ASPA members and staff in advancing public administration efforts. Shields is leaving the National Low Income Housing Coalition where he was responsible for operational, financial, fund development, and human resource functions.

Shields has served as an Adjunct Professor since 2000 where he has taught in AU's Department of Government, Department of Public Administration and Policy, and Washington Semester Program. Shields received his master's in American government at American University and Bachelor's degree in journalism, magna cum laude, from American University.
