SOC is pleased to announce the recipients of SOC Undergraduate Philanthropic Scholarships for the 2013-2014 academic year. Undergraduate SOC students apply for philanthropic scholarships during the spring semester prior to the academic year the scholarship is applied to tuition. Scholarships are awarded based on criteria established by the supporting donor.
RACHEL LANDIS - WILLIAM KERMIT BARCLIFT SCHOLARSHIP: $1,800
The William Kermit Barclift Scholarship was established by Helen and Kermit T. Barclift, in memory of their son William Kermit Barclift ’68, MA ’69. The scholarship is awarded to a current freshman in the School of Communication.
MATTHEW SHOR - JOHN R. BOWDEN JR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $5,000
The John R. Bowden Jr. Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of John Bowden Jr. ’68 by his parents, John and Mary Ann Bowden, and brother, David Bowden. The scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student enrolled in the School of Communication and studying photography. Recipient(s) are selected by photography faculty in conjunction with the Visions Festival in the spring semester. The scholarship is awarded to the student producing the most outstanding work in photography.
DANA BRAMBLE, FRANCESCA CROMARIE - MICHAEL FORMAN AND BONNIE BRAE FORMAN ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP: $7,500 each
The Michael Forman and Bonnie Brae Forman Endowed Scholarship was established by trustee emeritus, Michael R. Forman. This scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in film and media arts and who has excelled in the field.
TYA SCOTT - Morris G. Johnson Jr. Scholarship: $2,000
The Morris G. Johnson Jr. Scholarship was established by Charles C. Stephenson, CAS '93, in memory of Morris Johnson Jr. This scholarship is awarded to a rising junior in the School of Communication, providing support through both their junior and senior years.
ELEANOR GREENE - MARGERY KRAUS SCHOLARSHIP FOR THE STUDY OF GLOBAL COMMUNICATION AND PUBLIC AFFAIRS: $2,500
Established by APCO Worldwide, this scholarship is awarded in honor of APCO CEO, AU alumna, and trustee Margery Kraus ’67, MA ’71. It is awarded annually to a student with career interests in global communications and public affairs/relations with an international focus. The scholarship is awarded to a student who is currently enrolled, or has future plans to enroll, in a summer or semester long study abroad program offered by American University.
NICOLE CUSICK, JANE MORICE - MIRIAM OTTENBERG MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $6,000 each
The Miriam Ottenberg Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Miriam Ottenberg, a former reporter for the Washington Star, by friends and family. The scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in print journalism in the School of Communication.
