Who are SPA alumni?

More than 15,000 worldwide, alumni of the School of Public Affairs work in state and federal government, as lobbyists, business executives, teachers, journalists, web designers, and attorneys, to name a few. More than 40 percent of SPA alumni live in the Washington, DC area.

SPA alumni are certainly leaving their mark. From television talk show hosts to Members of Congress, check out some of SPA’s notable alumni.

How do I benefit if I become an involved alum?

  • You will meet old and new friends at our many alumni events throughout the year and have the opportunity to network
  • You will be informed of SPA happenings through our SPA Update newsletter and e-mail communications from staff and the Dean
  • You will have the chance to give back to your alma mater and possibly mentor a current student, guest lecture in a class or become a donor
  • You will be associated with a top ten school of public affairs and share in its rich offerings of lectures, speeches, forums and other academic conversations
  • Please visit the American University's Alumni Benefits & Services site to find out about the following benefits for active members:
    • Bender Library card
    • Jacobs Fitness Center discount
    • Child care access
    • Campus space availablity
    • Publications
    • Donor Rewards card

How can I get involved?

SPA sponsors many events each year and is involved with the university-wide activities as well. Past events include social/networking happy hours, financial planning seminars and more! Check out the current calendar of events for the upcoming months.

Other ways which alumni can become involved include:

  • Coordinating special events (i.e., happy hour, BBQ, etc.)
  • Talking with a prospective student about attending American University
  • Assisting in planning or hosting an alumni or student event in your city
  • Serving as a mentor to current students or other alumni
  • Participating as a donor to a SPA project or program

How can I stay connected to SPA?

The SPA Office of Development is forever updating and expanding our alumni information to better serve our alumni. One of the ways you can help is to register for the AU On-Line Community – an AU resource that lets alumni reconnect with old friends as well as establishing a permanent free e-mail address, network, and even design your own web site.
