Barbara Palmer

- Barbara Palmer is an expert on congressional elections and the success of women candidates. She is co-author of Breaking the Political Glass Ceiling, with Dennis Simon of Southern Methodist University, a book that explores how incumbency and redistricting shape the integration of women into Congress. As assistant professor at American University, Professor Palmer has given interviews and invited talks to a wide variety of groups across the country on the integration of women into Congress, elections and the success of female candidates, and the history of women in the judiciary. Her work has appeared in American Political Science Review, Politics and Gender, and a wide variety of law reviews. She teaches courses on women & politics, American politics, and public law. Additional Information: Barbara Palmer is the coauthor of Breaking the Political Glass Ceiling, with Dennis Simon of Southern Methodist University. The book explores how incumbency and redistricting influence the success of women candidates. She has taught courses on women and politics, women and the law, civil rights, judicial process, congressional internships, and equal protection. From 2001 to 2007, she was the political director of the Women Under Forty Political Action Committee, a nonpartisan organization that encourages young women to get involved in politics and provides financial support to women under 40-years-old who are running for Congress. She serves on the board of Running Start, a nonprofit dedicated to encouraging and training young women andl girls to run for public office.
