Kristine Kalanges

  • Kristine Kalanges is an assistant professor of Justice, Law and Society in the School of Public Affairs, where she studies the intersection of law, religion and politics. Her first book, Religious Liberty in Western and Islamic Law: Toward a World Legal Tradition (Oxford University Press, 2012), explores the comparative effects of religious beliefs and practices on constitutions and international human rights. She is also researching Islam in Europe and the United States, with a continuing emphasis on comparative law and religion, religious freedom, and the foundations of sustainable pluralism. She teaches courses such as Western Legal Tradition, Philosophical Problems in Law, and Comparative Systems of Law and Justice. Born and raised in the Pacific NW, she joined American University in the fall of 2009. Previously, she practiced law in the New York office of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP and served in Washington, D.C. as a law clerk for the U.S. Department of Justice.
