• Shanaysha Furlow Sauls is an assistant professor of political theory in the Department of Government. Prior to her appointment at American University, Dr. Sauls taught at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and Hood College in Frederick, Maryland. She is trained in the Western tradition of political thought and in the study of change and continuity in American political institutions. The title of her current project is The Concept of Stability and the Theory of Democracy in The Federalist. Her teaching and research interests examine the concept of modernity and its effects on political thought and praxis. Her courses include Individual Freedom vs. Authority, American Political Thought, Contemporary Political Thought, Democratic Theory, Feminist Political Thought, and Race & Modernity.
