Susannah Washburn has spent 20 years helping social service organizations meet community needs through strategic planning, grant-making and public policy formulation and execution. Susannah has served in political appointments under both the Bush and Obama administrations at the Corporation for National and Community Service (the federal agency that runs AmeriCorps). At CNCS, Susannah served in various positions, including Program Officer, Senior Advisor, and Chief of Staff. She was appointed to be the Executive Director of the White House Council for Community Solutions in 2012.
Currently, Susannah is an Adjunct Professorial Lecturer for the Leadership Program at American University. The Leadership Program is a four-year certificate program established in 1990 to give students the knowledge, skills, and experience to assume leadership roles in public service. Susannah enjoys helping her students gain greater self awareness, develop their writing abilities, and learn to use their talents for social change.
Susannah co-authored the 2009 Stanford Social Innovation Review cover story, “The New Volunteer Workforce.” She also serves on the Global Advisory Board for George Mason University’s Center for Social Entrepreneurship.
