This 12-day study tour (September 17-28, 2013) is a unique opportunity for alumni of American University graduate programs and experienced practitioners* who are interested in learning first-hand about international or multinational change management. Sponsored by the M.S. in Organization Development, which since 2007 has run international learning experiences in 6 nations (including 3 in South Africa), the tour focuses on change in the South African context. The tour is led by experienced AU faculty and local speakers/coaches with expertise in working globally.

Experience Fee

This experience is $3400, which includes:

  • Lodging for 12 nights at a university-affiliated conference center
  • 3 meals/day + snacks and beverages
  • Access to wifi services
  • Pre-arranged client field sites and local group transportation
  • Seasoned academic and professional staff guiding the study tour
  • Seminars, classes, excursions, coaching, and fieldwork
  • Museums and historical site tours
  • Excursion to the Sunday Rosebank Market for African arts and crafts
  • Overnight home stay with a Soweto family or a full-day planned visit to Pretoria
  • Limited pre-scheduled transport to and from the airport

 

Travel

All participants are responsible for travel arrangements and airfare to and from Johannesburg, South Africa and transportation to and from the airport depending on arrival/departure time.

Payment Policy

A $250 non-refundable deposit fee is due by May 31, 2013. The first payment of $1575 is due by July 2, 2013. The remaining balance of $1575 is due by August 2, 2013.

Cancellations, Refunds, and Changes

If you must cancel your trip, the effective date of cancellation will be upon our receipt of your written notification. Refunds for cancellations are subject to the following per person charges: Cancel 95 days or more before departure: no charge; Cancel 94-67 days before departure: 25% of tour price and deposit; Cancel 66-47 days before departure: 50% of tour price and deposit; Cancel 46-37 days prior to departure: 75% of tour price and deposit; Cancel 36-0 days before departure: No refund.

Space is Limited

*This tour is conduced in parallel with an American University course onsite. Participants in both programs share facilities for dining and lodging for most of the tour and attend several common briefings and lectures. Otherwise the study tour is a separate experience aimed at enhancing the global skills and abilities of post-graduates interested in working more effectively in international contexts.

 

The Schedule

September 17 - 20, 2013: Welcome and Orientation
Learn in depth about the South African experience through speakers, presentations, dialogues, visits to museums, cultural tour of pre- and post-Apartheid Johannesburg

September 21, 2013: Cultural Immersion
Options: overnight stay with a host family in Soweto or full-day planned visit to Pretoria. Free time for shopping and dining.

September 22, 2013: Post-Cultural Immersion
A day to have at leisure and also to share discussion of experiences from the prior day

September 23, 2013: South Africa's Heritage Day (National Holiday)
Join in the celebration of South Africa's Heritage Day national holiday, an annual commemoration of the nation's diversity.

September 24-26, 2013: Organization Visits
Visit 3-5 South African multinational companies, government agencies, and not-for-profits to hold discussions about the changes they are facing.

September 27, 2013: Wrap-Up
Participants will be invited to share their experiences and thoughts as we wrap up our visit and prepare to depart.

September 28, 2013: Departure
