Becoming a Candidate

Why does a former restaurant chain CEO decide to run for president, but a beloved New Jersey governor decide against it? Why would a junior senator from Illinois launch a presidential campaign against an opponent with two decades more experience? Every political race has its share of unlikely hopefuls, as well as a handful of apparent shoo-ins who decide to abstain. As the 2012 presidential and congressional elections approach, the question looms large: What makes people decide to run for office in the first place?
