ELTA Intensive - Admissions

Student Requirements

All applicants must be at least at least 18 years old and a graduate of high school/secondary school. Applicants must be able to at least be able to speak, read, write, and understand simple sentences. ELTA does not accept absolute beginners.

Application Checklist

In order to attend the Intensive Program, students must provide:
  • ELTA application form
  • $200 deposit to American University
  • Copy of a valid passport
  • Evidence of financial support for a full year
  • A completed CFIS form*This file requires Adobe Acrobat.
  • A bank letter showing at least U.S. $44,042 for a full year of study and living expenses*

*Only students requesting a F-1 visa must submit a CFIS form and bank letter. All documents must be dated within the past 3 months to be valid.

Application Deadlines

Students MUST submit completed application materials by this deadline in order to obtain a visa. Summer 2017: April 7. Fall 2017: June 30.

English Proficiency and Placement

Applicants will be placed in appropriate levels from beginner to advanced with a placement test taken during the on-campus orientation. ELTA Intensive does not accept absolute beginners; therefore, students are expected to be able to speak, read, write, and understand simple sentences.

Conditional Admission

Undergraduate students who successfully complete level 5 and graduate-level students who successfully complete level 6 in ELTA do not need to take an English proficiency exam (TOEFL or IELTS) in order to apply to American University’s conditional admission programs. Students who do not meet language score requirements for the Washington Semester® Program or the Abroad at AU program may also gain conditional admission for either program upon successful completion of a semester of ELTA.

Visa Information
