Scholarships & Affording Your Education

Since Graduate Gateway is a non-degree program, students are not eligible for funding through FAFSA. The majority of our students take out private student loans. The Gradute Gateway Program also offers partial scholarships.

Students may also choose to participate in the Semester American Installment Plan (SAIP) which breaks tuition into 3 monthly payments. To apply for a partial scholarship, please apply online through your application portal

Veteran Benefits

The Graduate Gateway Program is approved for Chapter 33 eligible-Post 911 Benefits. As you transition from your role in the military, the Graduate Gateway Program can be an excellent way to start working towards a graduate degree or to gain more experience in the classroom or in the workplace in a new field.

Veterans entering American University who have never applied for Veteran Benefits, must apply through the Veterans Administration website at www.va.gov. After applying for benefits and registering for classes, students must fill out a Certification of Enrollment form for VA Benefits and submit it to the Veteran Services Administrator in AU Central.

To receive the Certification of Enrollment form or to discuss further how Veteran Benefits can be used for the Graduate Gateway Program, please contact Valerie Verra, Veteran Services Administrator, at vverra@american.edu or 202-885-8012.

WISH Housing

The School of Professional & Extended Studies has partnered with WISH (Washington Intern Student Housing) to offer students the option of American University-sponsored off-campus housing on Capitol Hill. Students have the choice between an apartment or a room in a townhouse located near Union Station and Capitol South Metro Stations.
