The Washington Semester International Certificate Program

"My time at American University and the Washington Semester Program was the highlight of my undergraduate studies: Amazing international groups, dedicated professors and staff, excellent academic seminars combined with extraordinary guest speakers. It felt like I was in the middle of the global debate... Coming to WSP was the best decision in my life! It has been a remarkably rewarding learning experience that changed my view of the world and opened up many doors..." - Tobias Baude, University of Muenster, Germany

Seminar (8 credit EQUIVALENT)

For three days of each week, you will participate in an interactive seminar that combines traditional coursework with traveling through Washington to meet with the experts in your field. You engage in intellectual discussion with professionals who are knee-deep in the field you are studying. You'll go "behind the scenes"; into the offices of most of the speakers to get a first-hand insider's view of the week's topics of discussion. You meet the major players at the local, national, and international levels who are passionate about their stance, present valid viewpoints and are invited to challenge your point of view. This is a unique experience that leaves your with a comprehensive real world perspective.

The Internship (4 Credit equivalent)

Two days per week you will be gaining professional experience through an exciting internship in Washington. We provide you with an instant network of organizations through our extensive internship database. We will give you all the information you need about each organization, and provide you with résumé and cover letter review. You can start your search right away, or wait until you arrive in D.C. You will have the first two weeks of the semester to attend interviews and make your internship selection. Your internship will be accompanied by an internship course, giving the internship academic integrity, and providing you with faculty support.
