You will build a foundation for academic and professional success, while focusing on skills that can be applied in college and later in a career. This program is an excellent option if you have just completed high school and are taking a year before starting college.

American University's English language and Training Academy (ELTA) is an intensive, full-time ESL (English as a Second Language) program for students who wish to improve their academic English language skills while becoming closely oriented with American culture and university life.

This 15-credit fall semester program gives students admitted for the spring semester at American University an insider's perspective on Washington, DC. Based on the highly successful academic model of SPExS' Washington Semester program, the Mentorship Program is grounded in the best practices of experiential and traditional academic learning.

Established in 1947, the Washington SemesterĀ® Program is an experiential learning academic program that includes 8 credits of academic seminar in one of 12 topic areas, 4 credits of internship, and 3-4 credits of independent research or elective course.

Students gain hands-on skills interning for nine weeks in Washington DC with a professional organization and augment their hands-on experience by attending a seminar once a week in their field of study.
