Washington Semester Summer Internship Program

Washington Semester Program

This summer, if you will have completed your sophomore year of college, you have the opportunity to gain professional skills, study, and explore Washington, DC! Students in our program intern four days per week at a professional organization of interest to them. The fifth day they learn about and experience first-hand current events with real-world experts, a distinguished professor, and diverse peers.

Our program emphasizes experiential and hands-on learning to help you enhance your resume, explore career opportunities, immerse yourself in current events, and have a wonderful summer in DC!

Before you arrive, a Placement Advisor, with extensive internship experience, will assist you in finding a position. Advisors provide resume, cover letter, and interview help, as well as suggestions of organizations for you to consider. Students do the applications on their own, as is typical in DC, but you are guided throughout the process and benefit from the program’s 60 year history and your advisor’s many personal connections.

Recent internships help by our students include:

  • American Bar Association
  • Bank of American University
  • DC Public Defender’s Office
  • Democratic National Committee
  • National Defense University
  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
  • National Press Club
  • World Wildlife Fund
  • Women for Women International
  • Diverse House and Senate offices

In your classes, you learn directly from guest speakers and site visits during your weekly seminars. Students visit such places as:

  • Congress
  • The State Department
  • USAID and MCC
  • The World Bank
  • The National Press Club
  • The Supreme Court of the United States

Then, discuss current events related to these and other key actors in active-learning style classes with students from all over the country. These innovative classes, expert instruction, guest speakers and site visits, and diverse assignments enable you to learn about professional and personal opportunities, strengthen your resume, gain real-world experience, all while earning academic credit.

Finally, our summer program staff will assist you with reserving American University provided housing and meal plans. Or, you can make housing arrangements on your own. Washington, DC is an exciting place to spend a summer and we hope you will join us to live, learn, and intern here this summer!
