Washington Semester Program - Admission Requirements for Domestic Students

All students apply for a Washington Semester program through the WSP Online Application System. Applicants must first create an account and verify their email address before they will be able to log-in to the system and submit an online application.

Online applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but we recommend applying as early as possible as there are a limited number of spots for each program. It is never too early to secure an internship, and once you have been accepted and commit to experiencing Washington D.C., you will gain access to our extensive internship database! Also, some internships require considerable lead time for security screening and processing.

1. You may use our member school list to determine if your home school is an affiliated member school. Some member schools still require you to submit internal applications for review in addition to completing the WSP online application, so please check with the representative listed for your school BEFORE beginning the online application process. If you would like to know who your member school representative is, please contact washsem@american.edu.

a. If your institution is listed, after you submit an online application your member representative must then log-in to their online portal and approve your WSP application before the WSP staff will make an admission decision. The contact information for your member school's representative(s) will be listed within your submitted online application under Step 4: Review Institution Information.

b. If your school is not a member school, you will not need a member school representative approval to proceed with the online application process.

2. Make a list of any clubs, organizations and/or hobbies in which you participate as well as any leadership experience you may have.

3. All applicants will be asked to upload an electronic copy of a resume and home school transcript(s) as part of the required documentation. WSP will accept unofficial web copies of transcripts. Applicants may also request a transcript(s) to be sent from your institution(s) directly to our program office, and our program staff will internally upload the transcript(s) to your online application.

Our office works hard to make sure that you receive an admission decision quickly so you should hear back from us within two to three weeks after our office receives your submitted online application and your required documentation is complete.
