We are American University. We believe any act of violence, bullying, hate, abuse, rape, or harassment is one too many. When our culture of integrity, respect, and support is threatened, we do not stand by passively. We stand together and help.

This is the second of three monthly updates about American University’s efforts to address Student Conduct issues that surfaced in April 2014 through emails by an unrecognized group that calls itself EI, and to improve Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention throughout our community.

The university continues its full investigations and commitment to holding accountable those responsible for conduct violations. Guided by the White House Task Force recommendations and the Violence Against Women Act, AU’s new strategies to address sexual misconduct are in progress. Efforts include strengthening campus and community agency partnerships; additional education and training for students and public safety staff; building capacity for victim/survivor advocacy (one such measure will be to hire an additional sexual assault prevention coordinator and victim advocate); revising the university’s Discrimination and Sexual Harassment Policy; and a campus climate assessment that includes an external review of fraternity and sorority life. For specifics, read the full July 15 message.

We will post monthly updates on this site during summer 2014 about steps we are taking and progress made with your help.
