About

The OIT Technology Training Team is dedicated to the creation and deployment of agile, purpose-driven training in support of both enterprise wide initiatives and operations management. We provide information technology (IT) training and consulting services for the entire American University community, with a primary focus on serving AU's 1500+ staff members.

We offer training in a variety of formats ranging from online training modules, and virtual instructor led training to practical hands-on, skills based workshops, and customized training courses on enterprise-wide software for departments, committees, and work groups.

Our Technical Training Team is comprised of three, full-time dedicated knowledge providers who design, administer, and deliver the technical training curriculum. We manage our training program to align with AU's strategic plan and goals, and strive to foster professional development in a supportive learning environment.

  • Leverage industry best practices to design and implement learning solutions that meet university goals and IT process standards. 
  • Work in conjunction with technical and regulatory specialists to weave best practices and risk mitigation into our training methodology, content, and evaluation standards.

Pathways to Success for AU Staff

We understand that technological fluency is essential to your success as a staff member. We have charted Pathways to Success to help you strengthen your technical proficiency and assist you in meeting your professional goals. Each path provides a comprehensive approach to mastering a critical skill set. Please select a path to get started:
As a new staff member, you will be automatically enrolled in the New Staff Orientation, and you will be assigned the online courses, Reducing your Digital Risk: Security Basics Part I & II. We also recommend that you complete the following essential courses within four months of your hire date:

  • Skype for Business
The ability to communicate and collaborate with your colleagues is vital to your success. Whether you are working in the same office or across continents, speed and accuracy is critically important. These courses provide you with the skills you need to succeed:

Integrity, consistency, and knowledge of financial data is critical to the ongoing success of American University. The following courses will provide you with the tools and information necessary to work with financial data. Please note that access to financial data requires Data Custodian approval and mandatory introductory training:

AU uses the CommonSpot Content Management system to maintain and enhance the www.american.edu website. The CommonSpot training series will provide you with foundational to advanced webpage management skills. The series includes:

Captivating presentations, publications, and photos enhance the quality of your work and help spotlight your organization. These courses will help you create them:

Looking Forward: Strategic Goals for 2017 - 2019

  • Partner with the BI Steering Committee to pilot a comprehensive Budget and Financial Management (BIFM) Reporting training program.
  • Expand the BIFM training pilot model to other domains.
  • Invest in Student Success by creating an IT training program targeted to AU's Work Study students.
  • Partner with the CPC and Departmental Webmasters to completely revise and enhance the CommonSpot training curriculum.
  • Develop enhanced curriculum in support of the Office365 Phase Two Adoption Plan.
  • Create Invest in Your Success - Core Technology Skills Certificate Program Pilot for AU Student Workers.
  • Train and advise our campus partners during their ServiceNow implementation.
  • Utilize ServiceNow to create a fully integrated self-service registration process.
  • Strengthen the Admissions and Recruiting training curriculum.
  • Communicate biannually with organizational leaders to ensure that the training curriculum aligns with their needs.
