CHARTER

Purpose

The International Affairs Committee is responsible for overseeing all of American University’s international programs and activities and for recommending to the Board programs, policies, and activities that reflect AU’s distinctive commitment to becoming a premier global university and the priority, strategy, and organization to accomplish that.

Organization

The organization of the International Affairs Committee is modeled on the organization of the majority of the Board of Trustees’ standing committees:

  1. Nominations of International Affairs Committee officers and members for two-year terms shall be made by the Trusteeship Committee and approved by the Board of Trustees at the Spring Board meeting. Vacancies on the International Affairs Committee shall be nominated by the Trusteeship Committee and approved by the Board or Executive Committee for any unexpired term.
  2. The International Affairs Committee shall consist of at least four (4) voting trustees. A quorum for a committee meeting is a simple majority of those voting committee members present in person or participating by telephone.

Roles and Responsibilities

Guided by the University’s Statement of Common Purpose and the Strategic Plan and working in conjunction with the Academic Affairs Committee and the Finance and Investment Committee, the International Affairs Committee is concerned with such matters as the university’s international policies, programs, and relationships, including integrated study abroad programs, recruitment and retention of international students and faculty, language acquisition programs, development of academic partnerships with the world’s foremost universities, international research centers, the pursuit of strategic opportunities to connect American University with the world, and integrating international affairs into the university’s long-range and strategic planning.

The International Affairs Committee is responsible for ensuring that:

  1. International programs and organization reflect the university’s mission and priorities;
  2. International affairs-related administrative policies and procedures are effective, efficient, coherent, and consistent with institutional priorities;
  3. Financial resources are targeted to maintain high-quality international affairs programs;
  4. International affairs academic programs are appropriate for students;
  5. International affairs programs are evaluated effectively;
  6. The university’s commitment to making American University a distinctive and first-class global university remains strong and active; and
  7. Decisions are made consistent with those taken by the Academic Affairs Committee and the Finance and Investment Committee.
