On November 18, a contractor working on air conditioning repair in the vicinity of the Public Safety and Rockwood buildings found broken glassware and ceramics which were verified as being from the period of the American University Experiment Station during World War I. The find was in an area adjacent to the Army Corps of Engineers excavation now underway at "Lot 18" but not included in the Army Corps’ current work plan.
The Army Corps will work to establish procedures for appropriate testing, excavation, and remedy of the site where this find was made. After gaining approvals for the work protocols, the Army Corps expects to do this work at the end of the “Lot 18” excavation and remedy now underway, which in all likelihood, will be in spring 2006. The site is currently covered. If you have questions, please call 202-885-2020.
