International Students from Colleges and Universities Abroad: Are you ready for the academic, professional, and cultural experience of a lifetime? Through the Washington Semester International Certificate Program, you can spend a semester or an academic year in the dynamic, cosmopolitan city of Washington, D.C., where you will have access to some of the most influential people and organizations in the world. Upon completion of your program, you will receive a certificate which may fit into your degree program at home.

Through an intense, experiential seminar, you will have the opportunity to gain invaluable work experience through an internship at a local organization and meet the movers and shakers of Washington, D.C. An advanced-undergraduate program, the International Certificate Program attracts not only undergraduate students, but also the occasional recent graduate, graduate student, and young professional. Studying and living with students from across the United States and around the world, you will build lifelong friendships in a dynamic university community!

APPLICATION PROCEDURES

*Please note that students from Washington Semester partner institutions may be required to apply through their home university.*

International Certificate Applicants must submit the following application documents:

  • Washington Semester Application
  • Official University Transcripts
  • Letter of Recommendation
  • Proof of English Fluency: As proof of English fluency, we accept the TOEFL, IELTS (International English Language Testing System) MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery), Advanced Placement International English Language Exam (APIEL), or Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) scores. We require that students meet the following scores:
    Paper Based TOEFL: 550
    Computer Based TOEFL: 213
    Internet Based TOEFL: 80
    IELTS: 6.5
    MELAB: 80
    APIEL: 3
    SAT1-Verbal: 530
    TOEIC: 730

*We will also accept results of the Kansas Test offered at American University.*
