Life
In An International City

Living
in D.C.
Washington,
D.C. is not just the power and information capital
of the world, it’s also home of some of the nations
greatest and most recognizable museums and monuments
like the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial,
the National Air and Space Museum and of course the
U.S. Capital. Washington D.C. effectively represents
world cultures through fine arts, with establishments
like the Kennedy Center of Performing Arts and the
Warner Theatre. If you’re a shopper, you’ll be in
heaven when you walk through the streets of Friendship
Heights and Union Station. Let’s not rule out a variety
of malls and shopping centers and historic sites that
are housed our neighboring states, Maryland and Virginia,
which is just a metro ride away!
Students
come to D.C. for the internship but they soon realize
that this city is worth far more than just internships.
It is full of art, culture, outdoor activities, and
interesting people. The city is brimming with energy
and opportunity. In fact, our students grow so fond
of D.C. that many of them return after graduation.

The
Tenley Campus...
While
at the Washington Semester Program, students
stay at the Tenley Campus, a satellite campus
of American University designed specifically
for Washington Semester students located in
a beautiful residential area of northwest
D.C.
Tenley Campus houses three residence halls,
classrooms, faculty offices, as well as a
dining hall exclusively for program participants.
Other amenities, such as a fitness room, study
areas, reading room, computer lab, and playing
field are also centrally located. The surrounding
neighborhood includes entertainment, coffee
shops, and many restaurants. The Metro is
literally next door to the campus so you have
easy access to your internship and seminar
locations.
Remember, what you learn in the classroom
is only part of your college education. Take
advantage of all that American University
offers to enhance your college experience.
The main campus is only 3 ½ blocks away and
a free shuttle bus runs a continuous loop
between main campus, Tenley campus, and the
Metro station. As a Washington Semester Program
participant, you are a member of the American
University community and have access to all
of the services and amenities offered by a
major, modern university including a state
of the art fitness center, events, library,
and media labs. With 16 varsity sports, over
34 club and intramural sports and more than
150 clubs and organizations, including service
projects and religious organizations, there’s
ample opportunity for everyone to get involved.
You can rest assured that there is an outlet
on campus or in D.C. for almost any interest
you may have.
