Conditional Admission Opportunities

AU offers two opportunities for first-year (freshman) student to be considered for conditional admission.

International Gateway Program I (IGP I)

The International Gateway Program I (IGP I) is a 3-credit, semester-long intensive English program. It is designed for first year applicants as the first step in a two-part conditional admissions program that leads to full admission to American University. Those that are offered IGP I are academically strong students who require additional support with English language skills. IGP I includes 20 hours of in-class instruction per week. Students improve their overall language skills while taking four courses: Writing and Grammar, Reading and Vocabulary, Academic Discussion, and Media and Culture.

IGP I students must have a grade of C or higher in each course in order to advance to IGP II the following semester. Students who do not maintain satisfactory academic progress cannot repeat IGP I and cannot progress to IGP II.

IGP I is offered in the fall (August) semester only.

Required English Proficiency:

A minimum TOEFL iBT score of 64 or IELTS 6.0 is required to be considered for conditional admission to IGP I. For more information about IGP I, please visit: http://www.american.edu/spexs/elta/uigp/index.cfm

International Gateway Program II (IGP II)

The International Gateway Program (IGP II) is a 12-credit semester-long academic English program designed for first year applicants that leads to full admission to American University. Those that are offered IGP II are academically strong but require more support in academic English writing, reading, and oral communication skills.

IGP II students must successfully complete the program by earning a grade of C or higher in each of the four program courses and an overall minimum 2.0 GPA in order to be offered full admission to one of American University's degree programs the following semester.
