Why You Should Go to Student-Alumni Networking Receptions

By  |

Jessica Beasley and Pat Oltmann pose at the SPA student-alumni networking reception.

Jessica Beasley, SPA/MSOD ’13, almost didn’t attend the student-alumni networking reception hosted last year at AU’s School of Public Affairs. “I was working on a big project that kept me incredibly busy,” she said, “But I am so glad I [went].” Jessica met a graduate student at the event whom she says possessed a unique skillset for a role her organization had been trying to fill for months. She says, “I was thrilled because I was able to meet the recruiting needs for my client as well as help a fellow alumnus land a great opportunity. Win-win!”

Jessica attended the reception at the urging of Pat Oltmann, CAS/MEd ’78, alumni career programs coordinator, who has been organizing the annual events since 2000. She says alumni come back to AU to recruit for their organizations and offer informal career advice. “They may be seeking information and opportunities themselves, or perhaps just enjoy being back at AU,” she says. “It is extremely rewarding to see an alum come to one of these receptions to represent their organization, and share that they attended one of these events when they were a student and got an internship from someone they met that ultimately turned into full-time employment. Now they are back recruiting fellow alumni and students to work at their organization and have come full circle in giving back to AU.”

Co-sponsored by the Career Center, Office of Alumni Relations, and each school and college, these highly anticipated events offer employers opportunities to announce current openings to captive audiences and to build individual relationships with prospective employees and university partners.

Dates for this year’s receptions are as follows:
School of Public Affairs Networking Reception: November 15, 2016
School of International Service Networking Reception: TBD
School of Communication Networking Reception: February 16, 2017
College of Arts & Sciences Education Networking Reception: March 1, 2017
